The drama of the falling birth rate: the ISTAT Report
In 2023, the birth rate in Italy continues to decline: there was a drop in births of 3.9% compared to 2022 and 37.7% compared to 2008. Births to Italian couples account for over 75% of the total, while those to foreign parents are small.
The average number of children per woman drops to 1.20 and the average age of childbirth rises to 32.5 years. Istat data show a further decrease in births in Italy of 4600 between January and July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
The main causes of this phenomenon include: delay in training, employment difficulties, limited access to the real estate market and the consequent choice to postpone or renounce parenthood.
