The end of familiarism? Socio-demographic changes and care poverty in late-life: risks, answers and the emblematic case of childless older adults
The project focuses on the risk of care poverty in old age and the ways in which this is affected by current changes in family demographics and family care. The project therefore intends to address the following objectives:
a) empirically investigate the risk of care poverty among older people in Italy and explore how this is influenced by changes in the provision of informal care by family members and gender, socio-economic and health inequalities, with particular attention to the crisis of intergenerational care relationships due to the growing number of childless elderly people and the decline in the propensity of children to provide informal care to frail older parents;
b) understand how the welfare crisis is addressed in the public debate and in the political agenda;
c) analyse good practices to mitigate the risk of care poverty in old age in Italy and other European countries;
d) to carry out dissemination activities towards political decision-makers, stakeholders and civil society to stimulate public and political debate, in order to foster the development of more equitable societies.
In particular, the WWELL Centre will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of the provisions of WP3 - The emblematic case of childless older adults: care poverty risk, individual perceptions, and coping strategies and WP5 - Innovative policies and practices.
