13 May 2026  -  From adverse outcome prediction to e-health indicators of frailty in older populations
Prof.ssa Giovanna BOCCUZZO - Full Professor of Social Statistics - University of Padova.
This contribution presents a framework for constructing a health-related frailty index based on the best prediction of multiple adverse events, such as death, hospitalisation, dementia, disability, and others. The index is intended to measure the level of frailty across the entire older population of a Local Health Authority or a region, using administrative healthcare data. This objective is motivated by events that have made it particularly important to assess population frailty (COVID-19, heatwaves) and to implement stratification approaches that identify individuals at higher risk of adverse health outcomes.
Frailty is a latent and multidimensional concept and, as such, is not directly measurable. A widely adopted criterion for its assessment is to consider the main health outcomes more frequently experienced by frail individuals and, from these, to identify a core set of explanatory variables for such outcomes, which can then be used to build the frailty index.
From a methodological perspective, this process entails several challenges:
1.     identifying the most representative set of health outcomes, as redundant or overly limited sets may lead to the selection of an inadequate core of variables for the index;
2.     identifying a statistical approach that yields the best subset of predictors for multiple outcomes simultaneously;
3.   identifying an appropriate index construction procedure, given that it relies on dichotomous and ordinal variables, for which conventional aggregation methods are not suitable. In this work, the use of POSET theory (Partial Order Theory) is proposed;
4.     proposing an approach that results in an index based on a limited number of variables, so that it can be easily computed within Health Authorities;
5.     proposing a method that is as data-independent as possible, avoiding, for example, fixed weights to be assigned to the variables included in the index;
6.     proposing methods for comparing populations.
The contribution presents the methodological solutions adopted, the results obtained, and the research questions that remain open.

15 Mai 2025 - Demographic Challenges in the Mediterranean: Ageing, Fertility Trends, and Migration Dynamics
Prof.ssa Elena AMBROSETTI - Full professor of Demography - University of Roma La Sapienza.
The seminar will provide a comparative overview of the demographic evolution of the Mediterranean populations. I will address the main demographic issues since 1950 such as fertility, mortality, growth, demographic aging, and the age structure of the population. I will discuss the major demographic changes and its consequences for the Mediterranean region and describe the socio-economic and societal opportunities such as the silver economy, improvement in health of the population, and progress in education.

4 April 2025  -  Family Ties and Older People's Well-Being: evidence and Methodological Challenges
Prof. Bruno ARPINO - Full Professor of Social Statistics - University of Padova.
Demographic transformations such as population aging, declining fertility, increasing migration, and shifts in marriage and partnership patterns are reshaping family structures and intergenerational relationships. As a result, older adults are experiencing new family dynamics, including rising kinlessness and evolving roles within multigenerational networks. Understanding how these changes impact the well-being of older people is crucial for both researchers and policymakers.
This seminar will explore the complex relationship between family ties and older adults’ well-being, drawing on empirical studies of changing family structures and relationships. Particular attention will be given to the role of grandparental childcare—an increasingly significant aspect of intergenerational support. I will discuss the potential benefits and challenges of this caregiving role, including its implications for grandparents' health and well-being.
A key methodological challenge in this area of research is establishing causal relationships between grandparental childcare and older people’s well-being. In the final part of the seminar, I will review the most commonly used statistical methods for causal inference and present the results of a small simulation study comparing their performance. The seminar will conclude with a discussion on future research directions, including the potential of machine learning techniques for advancing this field and the bidirectional link between family relationships and older adults’ engagement with digital technologies.
