Loneliness and social isolation, research and algorithms to cope with them

Loneliness is a growing challenge in Europe, affecting people of all ages. In fact, a recent study shows that 13 percent of Europeans feel lonely most of the time and 35 percent feel lonely occasionally. In addition to personal difficulties, loneliness puts a strain on health systems, leads to lower productivity and reduces life expectancy. 

That's why the European Union has put it on the agenda and the Lonely-EU consortium has launched a three-year pilot project starting in February 2025 to develop evidence-based policies to monitor and tackle loneliness at both individual and societal levels, while promoting greater social connectedness.
