International Symposium on English-medium Instruction

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan Campus - 6 May 2016

English-medium instruction (EMI) in higher education

EMI is increasingly perceived as an important feature of the internationalisation of higher education institutions. Outside English-speaking countries, it is one of the key measures of internationalisation.

With the support of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Centro di Linguistica at Università Cattolica, CHEI has organised a symposium on EMI in higher education to create a forum for debate regarding the current situation of EMI. What are the challenges of EMI in Higher education? How is it being implemented? What are the consequences for students and teachers?

International keynote speakers include David Lasagabaster, co-author of  "English-Medium Instruction at Universities: Global Challenges” (Bristol/Buffalo/Toronto: Multilingual Matters, 2013); Robert Wilkinson, co-editor of “Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education: From Theory to Practice” (2015); and Gianmario Besana, Associate Provost for Global Engagement and Online Learning  at DePaul University, Chicago.

The Symposium is aimed at EMI practitioners, prospective practitioners, scholars and students with a strong interest in EMI.

The Symposium is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education as in-service training. E’ riconosciuto l’esonero dal servizio per i docenti di ogni ordine e grado, per il personale dirigente ed ispettivo ai sensi dell' art. 64, c. 4 e c. 5 del CCNL 20.
