Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

New publication on English-Medium Instruction and Internationalisation of Universities

 15 September 2020

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new volume edited by Hugo Bowles, Professor of English Language at the Università di Foggia, and Amanda Murphy, Director of the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI) at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

English-Medium Instruction and Internationalization of Universities looks at EMI and internationalisation in the context of language and teaching policy in higher education. This is observed through national government policy-making right down to the choices made by practitioners at an individual level. It also analyses issues pertaining to the notion of global and national citizenship, and the issues behind stakeholders in the higher education system being identified as native or non-native English speakers.

Experts in the field have contributed chapters based on research data from all over the world, including from universities in Asia, the Far East, Europe, Africa and Central America. Hugo Bowles writes about the role of English and the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in the higher education environment. Two of the contributing experts are CHEI affiliated faculty: Francesca Costa, who writes about ‘international coexistence at an Italian university, and Karen M Lauridsen, who focuses on what is required in order to create an internationalised learning opportunity for all students.

The book is published by Palgrave MacMillan and is out now.
