Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

The Centre

The Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI) at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore promotes and conducts research, training and policy analysis to strengthen the international dimensions of higher education. CHEI organises seminars, conferences, training courses and workshops; designs, conducts and commissions research; disseminates results through publications and conferences; and, in conjunction with the Schools of Education and Languages at Università Cattolica, it offers one of the only doctoral programmes in the world focused on higher education internationalisation.

CHEI aims to contribute to research and professional practice in higher education internationalisation at Università Cattolica, in Italy, across Europe, and globally, through extensive outreach in activities and affiliation with leaders and practitioners in the field. Five countries across three continents are represented within the leadership and management group of CHEI. Regular participation in international conferences on higher education internationalisation supports ongoing engagement in dialogue on national and regional priorities and emerging issues.

Themes in Focus

Within the diverse and rapidly growing area of higher education internationalisation, the work of CHEI is concentrated in four key areas:

  • Emerging trends in internationalisation: policies, strategy, mobility, recruitment, internationalisation of the curriculum.
  • Rationales for internationalisation: economic drivers, political factors, social/cultural motives, educational rationales.
  • International education and institutional development: incorporating at home and abroad dimensions into institutional strategy; using data to shape institutional strategy.
  • Internationalisation of Italian universities in the European and global context: creating a forum for dialogue for Italian institutions.
