IHE world loses a truly inspirational colleague

"We are extremely sad to learn of the passing of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Giancarlo Spinelli, one of the founding members of the Scientific Committee of our Centre", says Amanda Murphy, Director of CHEI. "Giancarlo was an indefatigable champion of internationalisation and a man of deep humility with a warm human touch."

Pier Sandro Cocconcelli, the President of CHEI,  expresses his deep regret for "a dear friend and an esteemed colleague, who played a key role in innovating the university system in Italy, introducing  internationalisation as a crucial component of the higher education programmes. We will really miss him both for his humanity and for the pivotal role he played in the country."

As Fiona Hunter, CHEI Associate Director, says, "We have lost not only a friend but a great mind and a true gentleman. He will leave a big gap in Higher Education in Italy and internationally. All of us who knew him will have wonderful stories to tell about him - let them live on and let us take inspiration from a man who always put his intelligent and kind words into action in order to serve the causes he believed in."

Francisco Marmolejo from the World Bank and also a member of the CHEI Scientific Committee remembers him as "a great colleague and a visionary and committed international educator." Reflecting what so many colleagues are feeling, he adds that "we will miss his inspiration, his great sense of humour, and his unique friendship."

The EAIE has published an obituary of the Association's past President on their site.
Our thoughts are with his family at this sad moment and our Centre will be represented at the funeral to be held on Wednesday afternoon through the presence of Edilio Mazzoleni, member of the Management Board.
