Time to get real!

 20 November 2017

CHEI's Associate Director Fiona Hunter was the keynote speaker at the 10th anniversary of the International Commission for International Relations at the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia on 16th and 17th November. The theme of the seminar was New Challenges New Solutions and Fiona highlighted the importance of "getting real" about internationalisation in the current climate of political, social and economic instability in Europe. She said that these shifts are not without consequences for universities regardless of the extent they seek, or claim, to be international, and invited universities to go beyond the rhetoric of internationalisation and purposefully reconnect it to academic values. This signifies promoting it in the wider context of the institutional mission  as a means to enhance the quality of education, research and service to society. Internationalisation can make a key contribution to shaping the minds of future generations by making them more aware of the world in which they live, more able to tackle the problems of the world, and more willing to engage with different cultures to do so.
