International Convention on Science, Technology and Society – IHE keynote speaker Fiona Hunter

 30 October 2017

Fiona Hunter, Associate Director of CHEI, was present last week at the first International Convention on Science, Technology and Society organised by the Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas in Santa Clara, Cuba.  One of the thirteen conference tracks was dedicated to internationalisation of higher education and Fiona opened the event as keynote speaker.

Fiona spoke of how the current political environment in a number of countries is shifting in a direction that challenges the values of internationalisation as understood in higher education. No matter how international universities seek or claim to be, this new context requires them to think strategically about how to reconnect more purposefully the academic values of internationalisation into institutional life and not develop a narrow focus exclusively on student recruitment or reputation. Universities may not always be able to significantly impact the political direction of their country but they can do much to embed internationalisation as a core element of their academic mission.
